ScreenshotThinkPoint (or Think Point) is a fake anti-spyware program which spreads via phony media downloads and corrupt pop-up alerts. ThinkPoint installs itself before causing chaos all over your computer by hijacking your browser and changing your registry. ThinkPoint will eventually produce a sign up screen for a heuristic program, where you'll be asked to pay USD$90 for full protection. Think Point is not a real security software so do not fall for this trickery and use an updated malware remover to make sure you PC is threat free.

ThinkPoint is designed to trick computer users by imitating Microsoft Security Essentials through a bogus alert message. The message is fabricated by a Trojan horse prompting users to purchase the ThinkPoint program to clean the infection. ThinkPoint is not designed to clean or remove any type of legitimate threat, and consequently serving no real use to computer users.

ThinkPoint and the 'Microsoft Security Essentials Alert' message displayed are in no way associated to Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0 or MSE 2.0. A computer that has ThinkPoint installed may display the Microsoft Security Essentials Alert in conjunction with a bogus online scan that returns a message that states 35 anti-malware tools have identified the 'Unknown Win32/Trojan' infection. Many of the anti-malware tools listed in the notification are legitimate security applications. Among the tools recommended for removing the 'Unknown Win32/Trojan' infection are AntiSpy Safeguard, Peak Protection 2010, PestDetector 4.1, Red Cross Antivirus and ThinkPoint.

If you believe that you have become a victim to ThinkPoint attacks, it is best to download a legitimate and reputable anti-malware program to detect and rid your system of ThinkPoint and any related malware files automatically from your PC. Many computer users may experience difficulty accessing a reputable anti-malware program. If that is the case, you can try the following:

  • Restart your computer and once it starts to load the Windows desktop try repeatedly pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del to open the Task Manager.
  • Locate the ThinkPoint process 'hotfix.exe' or 'mstsc.exe' in the running processes tab in your Task Manager and click 'End Process'.
  • In your Task Manager, select 'New Task (Run)', and type in 'explorer.exe'.
  • Install or load a reputable anti-malware tool such as SpyHunter to detect and remove ThinkPoint.

thanks Iamachine. i tried your solution, and after digging a little deeper i was able to remove the hotfix.exe. had to do a couple of different things but it worked. i found the file in thehkey current\windowsNT\winlog. it was in a "shell and showed the location,of the "roaming\hotfix.exec". i could not find it in the AppData shere it was listed so i just clicked "Delete" on the shel, and it was gone. there was another associated, i forgot the name but t was a monitor icon on the desktop labled "hstrm" or omething like that,. i went back to the task mgr, and ended the process and the message stopped popping up. thanks again!!!

  • JayJ says:

Wow. Thank you, guys. My first time here and you definitely saved me a lot of trouble. Just came down with Thinkpoint and what a mess it was making. Couldn't even run taskmgr to shut down its crap, couldn't run IE or Firefox to look for an answer. Went to another computer and found you guys. Just cleaned up registry and renamed the 'hotfix.exe' (couldn't delete it). Did a hard power down and now I have my computer back. THANK YOU!

  • Liz says:

The instructions from iamachine on 10/18/10 are PERFECT for removing Think Point! Follow then exactly! I personally did not have to do the last step in the c drive as it was not there. But all of the other was and with these instructions, it removed perfectly and my computer is back to normal! THANKS iamachine

  • BRENDA JOHNSON says:

  • hateviruses says:

Follow the first guy's instructions-it works!

  • nicolas l says:

create a new user account with admin right, switch to it, and kill hotfix.exe process, then you can delete it, It worked fine for me

    nicolas

  • War Horse says:

If you can't get your start menu or task bar to come up after killing the hotfix.exe. Hit control alt del, go to talk manager, start a new task, and type "explorer" into the box.

This should bring you back up.

  • Crystal says:

For all those that are having trouble getting onto the internet, you have to press Crrl+Alt+Del first and close out hotfix.exe from your taskmanager before you will be able to do anything else. You have to get taskmanager open as soon as your desktop loads or ThinkPoint will block it. You might have to restart your computer a few times to do this though.

I got this think point thing on my laptop today and had no idea how to get rid of it. I was unable to go online and had difficulty getting to task manager. I was finally able to get to it by pressing Crtl + ALt + delete continuously until task manager finally opened. I then followed everything that iamachine said and it worked. Hopefully it stays that way! Thank you so much iamachine, you were super helpful! 🙂

  • Barry W says:

    Word of Thanks to iamachine.
Discovered THINKPOINT on the laptop, truly thought it was real until it asked for payment to solve the problem. Used another PC to find the answer and frustrated at first to think i would still have to pay. But then found iamachine answer. Tried it, you may need to interpret the instructions a little based on your current software, but it was simple and IT WORKED.
Fingers crossed that it stays away and nothing else is lurking. Truly disappointed though that my exisitng ANTIVIRUS software didn't detect it.

  • laptopnewbie says:

Okay, so I followed the directions carefully and they worked! Thinkpoint disappeared and I deleted it's icon on the desktop. I was just wondering, is it bad if you went to C: and couldn't find Application Data? I deleted hotfix.exe and everything, but i'm just wondering if there's anything else i should look out for. Thanks for the awesome instructions Iamachine! Really worked!

  • Eric Andrew Bailey says:

  • Charlie says:

Iammachine is the best!!!!! Think Point was so irritating when trying to log on to my computer, you solved everything with no charge at all, BLESSINGS! I just knew i was going to have to pay some outragious fee for someone to come and push a few buttons, iammachine saved me from that. Thanks a bunch computer wiz, you've eased my stress.

  • Erik says:

thinkpoint likes to put a proxy setting in your internet options to stop pages from coming up.. open your internet explorer and check out tools/internet options/LAN settings and make sure "use a proxy" is not checked. if it is uncheck it and try your page again, this may get your pages moving.

  • Ron says:

I found that after unintentionally activating Thinkpoint, CTRL+ALT+DEL was not working, no matter how many times I tried. However, having WinPatrol installed is just as good. By finding hotfix.exe and killing the task, I was able to get back to opening my internet browsers and access this link to find out all the other files I needed to delete.

  • crystal says:

u can go to startup programs and go to currently running and shut it off long enough to find a way to remove it

GUYS, THIS IS TO HELP YOU

I got affected by ThinkPoint on this computer 10 minutes ago. If you wanna access your desktop, taskbar, etc. ,

1- Go in thinkpoint settings, then check the box; Unable unsafe start of computer
2- Open Internet Explorer (64 bit), because it is not blocked
    3- Then, download SpyHunter
4- Finally, destroy ThinkPoint (This is the point I

  • Brian Lewis says:

Current version of ThinkPoint DOES NOT let you run Task Manager, it kills it and other Task Manager alternatives before they run. Easiest solution is to go to control panel / users and create a new user and give it admin permissions, now log off and back in as this new user. Go to c:\users\normalusername\appdata\local and rename any EXE files you see there, its not named hotfix.exe anymore, it can be of any name but there shouldn't be an exe in that folder anyways so just rename it for now. Log off and back in as your normal user. Go to Internet Explorers / tools / internet options / connections and uncheck using a proxy server.
Download and install the latest Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes do perform full scans
Also recommend using Google DNS servers to prevent resolving malicious websites / their dns servers are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and are free

  • Mike Kramer says:

Thanks, Poulin, for your help. I tried to follow your instructions but they were just not clear enough -- all it did was launch the scan which locked the computer up when it was finished.

Thanks for the help with this. I was about to pull my hair out when I can to this site and you got me past it. Glad to know there are people out there that want to help and not hurt.

I just cleaned this up from a desktop, when your system starts up and it tries to run the scanner, let it run, then hit Ctrl-Alt-Del...kill it via Task Manager, then select start up Explorer via the Task Manager...

Locate and delete as per your preferred method, outlined in many of the online resources I found.

Good morning. I have Windows XP and Think point. I have started my computer in both safe mode and safe mode with networking. Once the user screen comes up I am unable to select a user and type in the password to get into the computer as the mouse is not working. Thank you.

I ended up following all the steps, but I couldn't find any of the components, so I wound up having to restore my uncle's system to an earlier time, and that seems to have taken care of it. Best of luck to all who run into this! I have since made sure to let all my friends and family know about the program and this site in case they have found ThinkPoint on their computers. Thank you so much for all your advice!

I easily removed ThinkPoint from my brother's pc by booting up in safe mode which enabled me to access System Restore. I then restored to the previous check point and now all is well. I did re-start his pc to make sure that this rogue programme did not return when re-booted but all seems to be OK.

For those of you that cannot get into the internet because of Thinkpoint, I was able to bypass by right clicking on the internet icon and running as an administrator. Hope this is helpful to some.

  • patricia says:

no matter what i do i still cant access the task manager please help me!!!

  • Jithin Sha says:

Think Point is a rougue antispyware, which will create unwanted pop ups and mis lead you to buy that application.
Most of the antivirus like Avast, Norton, Mcafee arre able to remove its source file and at the same time they are failed to remove the unwanted registry entries created by the infection. Once its source file is removed by the antivirus, the registry entries started to disable all the executables (applications or softwares) installed on your computer.

In this scenario, we have to remove the registry entries manually.

Please be very cautious while editing the registry.
