Internet Explorer Emergency Mode

Posted: May 4, 2011

'Internet Explorer Emergency Mode' is a fake error message used by rogue anti-virus programs as part of browser hijacking attacks. The 'Internet Explorer Emergency Mode' error screen is displayed to block you from visiting ordinary websites and may contain links to malicious sites. You should treat any appearance of 'Internet Explorer Emergency Mode' as a sign of infection by a rogue security application or browser hijacker and respond with appropriate use of anti-malware software.

'Internet Explorer Emergency Mode' is not the Real Warning It Pretends to Be

'Internet Explorer Emergency Mode' is only one of several fake errors used by hijackers linked to the fake AVG Antivirus 2011 rogue security program (not to be confused with the real AVG Antivirus brand). AVG Antivirus 2011 is a copy of Antivirus 7, Antivirus 8, Antivirus Pro, General Antivirus and other PC threats. The main signs of infection by these rogue anti-virus programs are fake errors and other false positives about infections and related system problems, so it shouldn't come as any surprise that they can also cause an 'Internet Explorer Emergency Mode' fake warning screen, too.

The text of the 'Internet Explorer Emergency Mode' error reads as seen below:

About Internet Explorer Emergency Mode
Your PC is infected with malicious software and browse couldn't be launched
You may use Internet Explorer in Emergency mode - internal service browser of Microsoft Windows system with limited usability.
Notice: Some sites refuse connection with Internet Explorer in Emergency Mode. In such case system warning page will be showed to you.

The formatting of this warning makes it appear to be at least semi-official, but 'Internet Explorer Emergency Mode' is really just a cheap way to redirect you away from websites that the rogue security programs don't want you to visit. Such websites are typically security or anti-malware-related, but you may see 'Internet Explorer Emergency Mode' errors at almost any website.

In fact, one of the few websites you're guaranteed not to experience an 'Internet Explorer Emergency Mode' problem with is the home website for the rogue security program that creates 'Internet Explorer Emergency Mode' in the first place. AVG Antivirus 2011 and other malware deliberately allow you to have unfettered access to their home sites so that they can process credit card payments and other information that you should be careful to keep to yourself.

You may also have other problems related to browser hijacking attacks:

  • A changed homepage.
  • Altered search engine results.
  • Random redirects to unfamiliar websites.
  • The modification of online content, such as extra embedded links.

Getting Back to Web Browsing Free from 'Internet Explorer Emergency Mode'

Putting a halt to all the appearances of 'Internet Explorer Emergency Mode' necessitates removing the rogue security program that creates these fake warnings. Although these rogue security programs will launch themselves automatically, you can switch to Safe Mode (accessed via F8 while booting up your PC) to disable this behavior.

After disabling the threat, you can remove 'Internet Explorer Emergency Mode' and all other components of the malware infection by using anti-malware programs to scan your computer.
