ResultBar
ResultBar is a commercial search engine website, as well as a web browser hijacker, that redirects you to the aforementioned site. The ResultBar website has a well-known reputation for consorting with malicious programs and provides poor search result links if you try to use its services. Although the ResultBar hijacker will pretend to be a legitimate browser accessory, normal program uninstallation methods will fail to remove ResultBar. You should delete ResultBar infections by using your choice of anti-virus or other threat-removal software, while making sure that your software is updated for recent threats before your scan your PC.
Why You Don't Want ResultBar for Your Search Results
As a search engine, ResultBar tries to look like a legitimate option next to other popular searching utilities, but people who've used ResultBar have reported that ResultBar's results are useless and driven by exploitation affiliate-marketing systems. ResultBar also has a high chance of directing you to websites that can attack your PC by installing Trojans and other malicious programs.
Although ResultBar doesn't put much effort into being a good search engine, ResultBar does put in a lot of work to force you to use ResultBar – whether you want ResultBar as your most-used search engine or not! The majority of victims that have been infected with a ResultBar hijacker report that they didn't install the program willingly. Here are the most likely infection methods that a ResultBar browser hijacker can use to attack your computer:
- Infecting your PC through a script in an advertisement or website. In most cases, these scripts require Java or Flash to be enabled for ResultBar or another malicious application to be installed on your PC, so disabling those features on a selective basis can protect you from such drive-by-downloads.
- ResultBar may also install itself after you launch a file from an illegal or risky source. Pirated software installation packages often have infections like ResultBar bundled with them; since ResultBar and similar infections tend to take up no noticeable size, they can be completely overlooked in a large program installation package.
- In some cases, you may become infected with ResultBar from spam email messages or other message-based sources. In most cases, spam messages will try to imitate a real person, a prize-granting contest or a special limited time offer.
How to Get Your Search Results Back to Normal without ResultBar's Meddling
ResultBar hijackers have been reported to use several methods of redirecting you to ResultBar, although most methods involve replacing the Google search engine in one way or another. ResultBar may replace your search result links, redirect you to the ResultBar website when you type an URL or redirect you when you click a link. ResultBar hijackers also target Chrome more often than other browsers, and you may want to exercise an extra level of caution if you're using that web browser.
ResultBar hijackers have been reported to be able to cancel downloads, to prevent you from using appropriate security software. You can work around this by using Safe Mode to prevent the ResultBar hijacker from becoming active, before you download and launch your chosen anti-virus program.
Trying to remove ResultBar manually is unlikely to work, and most victims of ResultBar attacks who've attempted this method have reported failure.
