Misleading Programs are applications that deliberately misrepresent the current security status or condition of a computer. Misleading programs usually notify the computer user of a potentially unsafe security risk, unwanted application or infection that is fake or nonexistent on the computer. A misleading product may look very convincing where computer users believe that it is a legitimate security program. Misleading programs may use a list of features, websites or even user testimonials attempting to convince a computer user that the program is legitimate. Misleading programs have also been known to present a “problem” to the computer user where the issue or problem cannot be resolved unless a certain version of the misleading program is purchased or installed. Usually the purchased version of the misleading program ultimately does not resolve the initial issue or problem.
